Chapter 7

“Have you recovered a little from your trip, Lady Arabella?“

“Well“, I cleared my throat.

Frost was wasting his concerned breath. This man hardly cared about Lady Arabella. We were sitting at a long, well-laid table in a small adjoining hall in the castle. I had no idea whether Frost was trying to make us aware of our insignificance by not dining with the Princes in his palace’s large dining hall.

“The atmosphere here is intimate“, Frost said with a suppressed smile, once again as if I’d complained aloud. I looked at him with surprise.

He was smiling.

“Shall I show you around the castle after dinner? Your brother said that you would like to move about a little.“

“Uhm. Yes – no – I don’t know.“ I looked at Aldan imploringly. Was Princess Arabella allowed to stroll around a hostile castle with an enemy of the country?

“My sister would feel honored“, Aldan replied firmly.

Fine. If he said so …

I noticed that Frost was looking at me again and began to blush beneath my veil.

“Then let us embark, Princess“, Frost got up and my knees went soft. Aldan wouldn’t leave me all alone with him, would he?

“If the Princes would permit? I think your sister isn’t very hungry!“

He thought wrong. But furtively shoving the food under my veil was only fun to an extent. I had pulled my handkerchief out of the ever-present pouch I was wearing on my wrist and put one of the delicious filled dumplings in it while the others were distracted by conversation. The dumplings were filled with herbs and chicken. It was unlikely that Princess Arabella would open her mouth wide enough to consume one of these delectible dumplings. She probably just stealthily chewed on a carrot when the table was copiously laid. Stuff like that led to eating disorders and I wasn’t planning on getting one. Thus, I had in the meantime filled the pouch on my wrist to the brim.

“Come, Lady Arabella“, Frost offered me his arm demandingly. I slowly got up and cast another imploring glance at my older … brother.

“Ottoline, you’ll go along when my sister views the castle, do you hear?“ The blonde, who, as a noblewoman, was permitted to dine with us, stood up beaming.

“Your wish is my command, Prince“, she murmured full of devotion and I sighed. Ottoline found the Prince very attractive, even a blind man could see that. I placed my hand on Frost’s arm and let him escort me out of the dining hall.

“Can we just leave like that?“, I asked uneasily. I mean, simply ditching the Princes there without their host was kind of impolite.

“My captain of the guard, Castosho, will keep them company“, he said curtly.

I didn’t know that he was Frost’s captain. In any case, dark-haired Castosho had shaved off his beard and a very manly, thoroughly appealing face revealed itself beneath it. I would have hardly recognized him if Frost hadn’t introduced us to the men sitting with us at the table. Apart from the two handmaidens and myself, no other women were present.
